Do not go gentle into that good night

"Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
- Dylan Thomas, Do not go gentle into that good night

Human beings are bizarre and anomalous creatures. We desire change at an inherent and perhaps even primal level, yet we simultaneously abhor and rebuff the very thing we crave.

Perhaps this is because, at our essence, we prefer to embrace comfort in the face of the unknown. We would rather avert our gaze than stare down, way beyond the precipice, into the endless void below.

I have always regarded myself as the type of person who constantly asks, "Do I dare disturb the universe?", and without hesitating, replies emphatically with a resounding "But of course".

Yet, is it really so despicable to turn toward comfort rather than espouse uncharted territories, particularly in our weakest moments, those of fear? Or is that the time in which we are required to delve into those unexplored depths with the most reckless abandon?

That is the unwavering, and likely unsolvable problem, I suppose. That is, the impenetrable question of the human essence, of how to define it, of how to negotiate it.

There is no definitive answer. The human condition is fluid and constantly manipulated by forces both exterior and interior to it. We can only decide how we wish to navigate our existence.

The rest is just ashes in the wind.

Night Film

“Mortal fear is as crucial a thing to our lives as love. It cuts to the core of our being and shows us what we are. Will you step back and cover your eyes? Or will you have the strength to walk to the precipice and look out?”
― Marisha Pessl, Night Film

I felt my life was mostly the live action epitome of existentialism - existentialism incarnate - with fragmented bursts of normalcy. My reality a single extended exhalation. I felt frustrated, angry, anxious, confused, but mostly, sad.

After a fitful night spent thrashing around between the suffocating sheets unable to embrace the solace of sleep, I finally managed to fall into a disturbed and restless slumber long after the sun had risen.

I awoke less than an hour later, unsettled, an aching sense of discontent lingering like stale smoke around my shoulders and collar bones. These nightmares are frequent and unyielding.

Crucify Your Mind

I decided to create this post in anticipation of the colder months of the year. We are headed for Autumn on this side of the equator. Although, honestly, I do not feel it yet. It is still so hot I can barely motivate myself to do anything! But, it is starting to get darker earlier in the evenings (which upsets me because that fact that it is still light until after 8 pm is one of my favourite things about Summer.) And because I am an insomniac and hardly ever sleep I also know that the sun is starting to rise later in the mornings. The most I sleep a night is usually 4 or 5 hours and never continuously, I have terrible nightmares and wake up constantly. What keeps you awake at night??

Even though I am going to miss Summer, I am actually looking forward to the cooler seasons. What is your favourite season?? :)

Searching for Sugar Man

I was so thrilled to hear that Searching for Sugar Man won the Oscar for Best Documentary!!! It is one of the best films I have watched in a really long time. It is one of those that really stick with you even after the credits roll. It seems that some of the best recent films are made be Swedish filmmakers - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Let the Right One In (both the original Swedish versions, not the American remakes), great Swedish directors like Mikael Håfström (1408 is one of my favourite movies!!!), and now Searching for Sugar Man - which is directed by Malik Bendjelloul. A friend gave me the DVD for my birthday and I watched it practically the next day. I won't give anything away, but it left me in tears, yet also hopeful and inspired. Living in South Africa I have known and loved Rodriguez's music, but this film took his story to another level. I recommend everyone should watch it!

Have you seen Searching for Sugar Man?? What did you think??

What do you think of my Searching for Sugar Man inspired outfit post?? :)

You Say You Want a Revolution

I was almost definitely born in the wrong era. If I could have been around in the 60's or 70's...all the amazing clothing...sigh...I am pretty sure I actually have a problem when it comes to thrifting for vintage and retro clothing. I am quite literally obsessed. I know, I know, buying into the whole consumerist infestation. BUT in my defense I do have a very strong argument in support of my, um, 'addiction'.

Firstly, buying second hand and vintage clothing is eco-friendly. I mean, you are actually recycling these items. If we didn't rescue this clothing it would end up in a landfill somewhere and take years and years to decompose. Secondly, I feel that because you are buying from thrift stores there is a good chance that no one else will have the same thing that you have. And this way you can be so much more creative with your outfits. In my opinion it is a form of art. Of course it isn't high art, but so what?? It can still be thought provoking, aesthetically pleasing and a form of expression.

That is why the outfit in this post is 90% vintage, thrift or DIY. So hands up for vintage people! Support the Retrovolution! (I saw someone use this term online somewhere and I just love it!)

P.S. I will be doing a DIY post soon so you can (hopefully) look forward to that!
