A Portrait of a Woman as a Young Girl

Last night I dreamed that I was running through a forest. I looked down and realized that I was naked. I was confused by the serenity of my surroundings because my heart was pounding with fear. I had the feeling I was being chased. I glanced behind me and noticed an ominous shadow in my wake. I ran until I reached the bank of a rapidly flowing river. I spun around to face my shadowy opponent but I was only surrounded by trees and flowers and the soothing sound of the animated water below me. The distinctive aroma of cherry blossom suddenly occupied my olfactory senses. I looked across the river and saw a tall, pregnant woman staring back at me. "Am I dead?" I screamed, but the words caught in my throat and I was acutely aware that I could no longer speak. The woman smiled at me and dived into the water. I awoke expecting to find her beside me but I was alone.

Pawn Shop Blues

So I'm officially getting sick, which really sucks. I really hate the flu. My sister is even sicker than I am so I'm pretty sure I got it from her. All I want to do is lie in bed and watch movies but alas my crazy life demands otherwise...sigh...But anyway, enough complaining! The sun is shining and I am going to appreciate every moment of it until the Winter really arrives. It's SUPER windy though, but I am kind of used to it, living in the (other) Windy City and all.

So what do you guys think of this new look?? I tried to get a little bit creative with Photoshop :) Plus I named the post after a Lana Del Rey song because I am just a tiny bit obsessed with her. Thoughts?? Anything you would like to see on the blog?? :)

Oh, and the DIY post is coming soon, I promise! :)

P. S.: I recently joined Formspring if you have any questions you would like to ask me :)

Searching for Sugar Man

I was so thrilled to hear that Searching for Sugar Man won the Oscar for Best Documentary!!! It is one of the best films I have watched in a really long time. It is one of those that really stick with you even after the credits roll. It seems that some of the best recent films are made be Swedish filmmakers - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Let the Right One In (both the original Swedish versions, not the American remakes), great Swedish directors like Mikael Håfström (1408 is one of my favourite movies!!!), and now Searching for Sugar Man - which is directed by Malik Bendjelloul. A friend gave me the DVD for my birthday and I watched it practically the next day. I won't give anything away, but it left me in tears, yet also hopeful and inspired. Living in South Africa I have known and loved Rodriguez's music, but this film took his story to another level. I recommend everyone should watch it!

Have you seen Searching for Sugar Man?? What did you think??

What do you think of my Searching for Sugar Man inspired outfit post?? :)

P. S. My awesome photographer Dad took these pictures for me!!! :) <3

You Say You Want a Revolution

I was almost definitely born in the wrong era. If I could have been around in the 60's or 70's...all the amazing clothing...sigh...I am pretty sure I actually have a problem when it comes to thrifting for vintage and retro clothing. I am quite literally obsessed. I know, I know, buying into the whole consumerist infestation. BUT in my defense I do have a very strong argument in support of my, um, 'addiction'.

Firstly, buying second hand and vintage clothing is eco-friendly. I mean, you are actually recycling these items. If we didn't rescue this clothing it would end up in a landfill somewhere and take years and years to decompose. Secondly, I feel that because you are buying from thrift stores there is a good chance that no one else will have the same thing that you have. And this way you can be so much more creative with your outfits. In my opinion it is a form of art. Of course it isn't high art, but so what?? It can still be thought provoking, aesthetically pleasing and a form of expression.

That is why the outfit in this post is 90% vintage, thrift or DIY. So hands up for vintage people! Support the Retrovolution! (I saw someone use this term online somewhere and I just love it!)

P.S. I will be doing a DIY post soon so you can (hopefully) look forward to that!

(Also, these amazing pictures were taken by my sister, Emma <3 )

Cotton Candy Polka Dots

I love summer. I really do. But it has been TOO hot lately! I literally have to shower at least twice a day just to cool down. This was a particularly hot day. Plus I had to drive for 50 kilometers to university and back. Without aircon. Unfortunately I do not have such luxuries. Luckily I managed to put together an outfit that was pretty cooling and that I actually liked! These shorts are pretty airy and I love the polka dot print. Also the top is quite loose and roomy so I was able to get some air! I had to put my hair up because it was just too hot to wear it loose.

I hope you like this outfit! :) Let me know what you think in the comments below!

P.S.: My lovely Dad took these pictures as well :) Thanks Dad! <3
